What is ServiceNow? What does it do?

Hmm! So, what is ServiceNow? Is it a database? Is it an ERP? Is it a software application of some kind? Is it SaaS, PaaS or an IaaS? Is it some kind of Software Suite?

Simply put ServiceNow is a PaaS. PaaS stands for Platform as a Service.

But what does that mean? What does ServiceNow do?

Very simply put, ServiceNow is used to automate the provision of services in an organization/company. For example, let's say, you work at a large company with over 10,000 employees. Each employee has a set of hardware and software that they use. This could be a computer, a printer, an iPad, a smartwatch etc. But things tend to break at times. So, let's assume that an employee's laptop suddenly breaks down due to some bug. Using their iPad, which is also connected to the company's network, the employee can log onto their ServiceNow portal and create a complaint. From here, ServiceNow will handle the entire process, where the complaint is sent to the concerned computer-technician for resolution. The concerned technician would take a look at the laptop, fix it and then update the status of the complaint in the ServiceNow system as "resolved".

So, again, what is ServiceNow? Simply put, it is a cloud-based Platform that is used for the automation of services inside as well as outside an organization/company.

Now some might think, if ServiceNow runs on the cloud, how does it connect to a company's internal network? Good question.

Some people might also think, each company is different. For e.g. a hospital is completely different from a tech company like IBM especially since the hardware devices in a hospital are completely different from that in a tech company. So how can ServiceNow work in all sorts of organizations?
